Modem Troubleshooting

The common modem problems that people experience is that their modem lights may turn off suddenly without any notice. A typical modem ( wired modem for broadband ) would have 4-5 indicators like the Power, DSL, Internet, Ethernet and USB. However one can connect his broadband connection with either the USB or the Ethernet. In a BSNL Data One broadband connection in India, sometimes the indicators may turn off. This is due to any kind of connection loss or due to the temporary overload in the servers. However, the lights may blink after a few minutes. If the problem persists then we can recheck the connecting wires and then insert them once again. Check the phone connection too, sometimes the phone may be out of order.

Check for the dial tone of the phone, then retry connecting the modem. Even if this fails, then check whether the Ethernet indicator is in an on state. If it is on, then go to the Internet Explorer and then type 192.168.1.1. This would be the primary gateway for the internet connection in almost all countries. You can even check the settings page once you enter the above in your browser. For India's BSNL Broadband connection one may access the site dataone.bsnl.in and then click management tab. Then save and reboot the machine, then you will sure get your homepage.

If it comes like the requested web-page is not found in the Firefox browser the check your internet LAN connection. Check whether the cookies are turned on, whether any kind of spyware is inside the software. Go to tools and then page info, then click privacy tab. If you find that there is no cookies stored the enable cookies and then continue. If you don't get the homepage then go for a second trial, still if you fail to get the homepage then reboot your modem and try again. Double check whether your service provider's line is there ( Internet line ). Wait for few minutes as sometimes repair work or maintenance work may take place. Even the site that we visit may have some maintenance schedule.

Check whether the power is turned on, if there is a power shortage or voltage drop then modem may not turn on. If the modem is over-heated due to excessive use sometimes the modem may not turn on for a short period of time. Sometimes the fuse of the indicators may also be broken. If you drop or tamper the modem then it may not work. In these cases gently tap the modem or keep the modem outside in air. Even if the problem persists then plug in the power supply to a different source or switch board.

If the internet indicator in the modem does not turn on then it is sure that there is a problem with the connections in the modem. Check whether the wires are properly connected to their respective jack and the computer. Call the service provider for assistance in any kind of settings in the modem. If you still have problems then get a new one, wired modems are more prone to problems than the wireless modems.

In one aspect it is true, wireless modems are easy to use and at the same time the problems that occur due to loose connection in wired modems do not occur here. Wireless modems can also cover a particular area, Wi-Fi whereas wired modems need the computer to remain stationary. Problems in wireless modems occur only when the signal reaches a longer distance than its actual capacity and when there is an overload of connections in it.

Yes of course, but it is possible in broadband connection but it is limited in DSL or any other type of connection. You can make phone calls without any trouble to the internet. The speed would not be affected. The phone calls fall under different signals than that of the internet and hence they would not be affected. The data transmission is normal during simultaneous operation of the phone and the Internet.
